Thanksgiving Day: Keeping the children occupied
Many families will be visiting relatives for Thanksgiving and this can be a challenging time for young children. Our family is large enough that we use a church fellowship hall for our Thanksgiving meal. So we bring items to keep them occupied while the cooking, eating and clean up is happening.
We try to pick up some craft projects that do not require glue or cutting. For example: decorating their own placemats, cardboard picture frames or making fall leaf decorations. Ideas from oriental trading company, Michael’s and Wal-Mart are perfect to keep children occupied. Don’t forget your camera to capture these memories.
We also bring some games to play. This can be card games, board games, a piñata or balls for outside play. If it is going to be a long visit, you may want to pack the movie, Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving or a good Christmas movie to start of the Holiday season.
The older children will probably want to take along their I Pods and hand held video games to keep themselves occupied.
For the parents, eating, socializing and football can be the highlight of Thanksgiving however, for the children it can seem like a long day away from home without a plan to keep them occupied!
Plan ahead for a Happy Thanksgiving!
Good ideas!
